The roof is arguably the most important structure in your home, so it’s important to know the truth about common roofing myths.
Nothing provides protection from the elements to your home like your roof does, and that’s why your roof is such a big investment. Roofs aren’t cheap, and if you want your roof to last, it’s essential that you take proper care of it. However, it’s not easy to take great care of your roof, or to make the right decisions regarding your roof, when you believe the common myths about roofing. That’s why the experts at Sargeant’s Roofing have come up with this list of truths about the most common myths about roofing:
Myth #1. There’s no reason to remove the old shingles; you can just add new ones on top of them.
Although some building codes may agree that it’s acceptable to add new shingles over old ones, you aren’t doing yourself any favors when you cut corners. Your shingles cover a layer of wood sheathing, and the age of the roof, improper ventilation, and leaks can cause the sheathing to rot. Inspecting the wood sheathing requires easy access to it, but when there are layers and layers of shingles on top of it, it doesn’t make it easy. Laying shingles also adds extra weight to your roof, which can cause the joists and decking to bow. Plus, the next time you have to replace your roof, your roofers will have to remove two layers of shingles instead of one.
Myth #2. You only need to replace roof flashings when the roof is replaced.
While it’s true that when you replace your roof is also a good time to replace your roof flashings, it isn’t necessarily the only time they need to be replaced. Flashings help to divert moisture away from the areas in your roof that are vulnerable to damage, like around pipes, vents and any other roof openings, and flashing won’t typically last as long as your roof will. It’s smart to keep a close eye on your roof flashings every six months or so to watch for signs of dried or cracked caulking, broken flashings and shingle damage connecting to the flashings.
Myth #3. The more attic insulation you have, the better it will protect your roof.
It’s essential to have the proper amount of insulation in your attic. This helps to prevent ice dams from forming and enhances the efficiency in your home. However, if you over-insulate your attic, it can lead to issues, especially if you block the ventilation at the eaves and soffits of your roof. Excess insulation can trap moisture inside your attic, which can rot the wood sheathing in your roof and lead to mold growth. Insulation and ventilation are both essential for the health of your roof, but it’s important to have the proper amount of each.
Myth #4. Your gutters aren’t a part of your roofing system.
Many homeowners think of their gutters and their roofing system as two completely separate things, but your gutters are actually an essential part of your roofing system. Your gutters help to keep moisture off of your roof, which helps to prevent roof leaks and all kinds of other issues. Because your gutters are such an essential component of your roof, cleaning them out on a regular basis is one of the easiest and most important maintenance tasks you can do for your roof.
